Cognition for Technical Systems - CoTeSys 2008

The 1st International Workshop on Cognition for Technical Systems is taking place from 6-7 October 2008 at Technische Universität München. Jaime Gómez will be presenting Learning in technical systems: a Sign based approach

The paper explores the following assumptions:

  • there is no cognition without categorization
  • concept formation is sign a mediated process which is extended and developed in a formal and operational fashion.
  • learning is involved with forward and inverse cognition.

Xabier Barandiaran, from the University of the Basque Country is going to stay with us for some months. The objectives of this period are:

  • To advance on the theoretical integration of the cognitive robotic projects associated with the ASLAB group (including the ICEA project that is in focus with the euCognition network)
  • To operationalize in terms of dynamical systems and control theory basic cognitive concepts, in particular the notions of agential identity, cognitive/mental life, normativity.
  • To analyse in detail an evolutionary robotic simulation model that satisfies a minimally cognitive task, making use of dynamical system theory and information measurements of causality along dynamical processes.

This stay is supported by the euCognition network funded by the European Commission.
